The biomass heating plant has an output of almost one megawatt and provides the entire site with a sustainable supply of heat. Spanning a total area of around 100,000 square metres, this is home to Roto Window and Door Technology headquarters and one of the 18 production sites around the world. Operating the plant makes it possible to save around 700 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year – an important step towards achieving the company’s climate targets. The biomass heating plant is fuelled by woodchips from local forests. When burned, they only release as much carbon dioxide as the plants absorbed while growing. This creates a closed carbon cycle, which is considered carbon-neutral.
“The plant not only provides a carbon-neutral central heat supply but also makes us largely independent from fossil fuels and reduces our need to acquire them externally,” explains site and factory manager Almir Poric. “This plays a key role in providing a reliable supply to our company headquarters and therefore contributes to the reliability that we can offer our customers.” What’s more, the biomass heating plant is testament to the architectural hardware and sealing specialist’s long-term commitment to protecting the climate and conserving resources.
Other measures in the pipeline
Roto Window and Door Technology with its around 4000 members of staff boasts more than 30 global sales subsidiaries and 31 logistics and distribution centres, alongside its 18 production sites. It has set itself the objective of enhancing the climate neutrality and reliability of supply of the entire group by installing additional power and heat generation systems using renewable energy sources, among other measures. Company headquarters in Leinfelden-Echterdingen explains that by doing so, the company is not only reducing its own carbon footprint, but also that of its customers.
