| 3 “In particular, new customers have reserva- tions at the start and are uncertain as to how they can correctly integrate Roto systems into their aluminium profiles. We obviously prefer to tackle these hesitations in personal discussions and with corresponding product training directly at the customer’s location. However, the distances in the United Arab Emirates are often so large that a lot of time that you would actually like to dedicate to customers is spent travelling. Roto’s assem- bly videos provide important support in this respect. They are produced ‘close to the customer’; merely one click on the link that we have provided is all that is needed to get a clear and comprehensive display of all the fabrication steps.” Mahmoud Aljayyousi, Managing Director of Al Bayraq Hardware Trading LLC, Sharjah (United Arab Emirates) ■■ New at Roto “Easy to understand, a fantastic instrument of consultation, shorter communication paths – that’s how I would summarise the customer response to Roto’s first interactive installation videos.” Matthias Nagat is the Head of Applied Technology International AluVision at Roto and was closely involved in the production of the videos. “Some specific suggestions concerning the first videos have also been directly incorporated in the production of the more recent videos which are now gradually being placed online.” Interactive Roto installation videos Appreciated by pros “I have been involved in the aluminium system business for many years, for much of that time as a sales employee and an appli- cation engineer. Today, as a HUECK product trainer, I focus on internal training for our em- ployees as well as for our customers’ tech- nicians and fitters. I believe that one thing has remained constant during this time: the better and clearer the documentation is for the handling of new as well as established systems, the more efficient training can be. This is particularly the case in the hardware area, where over the past few years technical requirements have risen sharply, especially with regard to the aluminium Euro-groove hardware. Roto’s assembly films provide a very good additional training and information option as part of my courses, in addition to our internal processing documents.” Harald Ickert, Product Trainer at HUECK GmbH & Co. KG, Lüdenscheid (Germany) ■■ Event The Red Dot Award presented for product design in Germany is one of the greatest and most well-renowned design awards in the world. Once a year, an international jury of specialists votes on outstanding product designs in a total of 31 com- petitive categories. This year, a team of Spanish architects, among others, has been entered in the ‘Interior Design Element’ category with an extraordinary window solution. A reason for Roto to ‘keep its fingers crossed’, since thanks to a joint effort with this team of architects, special hardware solutions were developed in Montmeló for the ‘WECO 2C’ window. WECO Windows at the Red Dot Award Design award with Roto? At the end of January, the ‘WECO 2C’ window made the journey from Madrid to Mülheim an der Ruhr to be examined by the Red Dot jury, consisting of around 40 design experts. “This window is the result of numerous ideas and even more development work”, says architect Iciar de las Casas in conversation with Roto Inside. “The distinction of a Red Dot Award would be a fantastic added reward for our efforts. Even more so, because we have received initial acknowledgement in the form of very positive feedback from our builders.” An update for timber windows WECO Windows, based in North Madrid, is supported by an entire group of experienced architects. The two founders, Iciar de las Casas and Rosario Chao, got to know each other during their course at Madrid’s school of architecture and after graduating, they completed several projects together. “WECO Windows was the result of this cooperation”, explains Iciar de las Casas. And it was also the result of dissatisfaction with existing window solutions, as emphasized by the architect: “In earlier projects I worked with both existing windows ‘from the catalogue’ as well as with special solutions I developed myself. However, at some point, I felt that something was missing from most windows, that they didn’t completely live up to my idea of contemporary architecture. We wanted to give the traditional timber window a thorough ‘update’.” The landscape comes into the living room. The technical progress achieved in glass production, with hardware and insulation systems, as well as in the new timber fabrication options, would have to be exploited in order to break away from the traditional aesthetics of typical timber windows. “Our idea is based on transparency and lightness: large glass sur- faces that are not visually interrupted by a profile. Only glass and the premium frame are visible from the outside. The aluminium profiles and hardware remain concealed between the two glass sashes, inserted in the double glazing system with air chamber. The inward-facing glass frames can be coated in any colour. This type of window virtually opens up a building to the surrounding landscape and creates impressive views.” But the internal values of the WECO windows are also impres- sive: with triple glazing, the windows from Spain comply with the passive house standard with zero energy consumption. With the Tilt&Turn version in its last development stage and preliminary marketing, the team is already planning additional versions using sliding and pivot openings. Maximum ease of operation is guaran- teed, even for very large sashes. This is supported by various fac- tors including special hardware, developed by the architect team together with Roto technicians in Montmeló. “We use both the NT Designo concealed hinge-side as well as a specially upgraded Roto NT Power Hinge, which ensures reliable operation even with our largest and heaviest sash elements. The individual sashes can weigh up to 200 kg in the Tilt&Turn design. The hardware systems also achieve the best performance values with respect to sealing strength and burglary protection. Together with Roto we are cur- rently also developing a particularly efficient hardware solution for large sliding windows”, says Iciar de las Casas. Just glass and timber The exhibit constructed for the Red Dot competition is fairly small – by WECO standards – and is ‘only’ 1,230 mm wide and 1,480 mm tall, but it displays the architect team’s clear design language. Nothing interrupts the view through the window and only glass and natural timber are visible. Iciar de las Casas and her colleagues still have to wait until the beginning of March for the expert jury’s decision, while the actual award ceremony takes place on 29 June 2015. The entire Montmeló-based Roto team naturally wishes them the best of luck, for not entirely unselfish reasons. And Roto Inside also adds its support. && You can find more information on the Red Dot Award at: en.red-dot.org Leonor Suárez Engel from WECO Windows and Roto technician Miguel Pereira supervised window construction in the Red Dot Design Awards’ exhibition halls. The idea of the ‘WECO 2C’ window is based on transpar- ency and facility: large glass surfaces that are not visually interrupted by a profile. The Roto NT Power Hinge and the NT Designo concealed hinge-side in the ‘WECO 2C’ provide maxi- mum ease of operation even for extremely heavy sash weights. The inward-facing glass frames can be coated in any colour. && All assembly videos, as well as videos reporting on exhibitions and other events, can be found here: videos.roto-frank.com/en/ The installation of innovations displayed at BAU 2015 in Munich is also explained step-by-step in new assembly videos. “We show why the latest evolution of our Roto AL and Roto AL Designo Tilt&Turn hardware is now even faster, more efficient and reliable”, says Matthias Nagat. “In this context, we also present the new aesthetics of the now standard Roto Sil Nano surface-finish quality, which meets even the most demanding requirements. The assembly of the Roto Patio Lift, our aluminium range’s first Lift&Slide hard- ware, is also displayed in great detail. The new video, as part of the comprehensive technical documentation, is a fantastic opportunity to introduce our customers to this innovation.” The new videos are based on the established interactive approach so appreciated by cus- tomers. The videos can be played in full, but a navigation bar also allows individual assembly sequences to be accessed directly, for repetition or a greater depth of information. Voice narration in addition to the images is not required, which allows the videos to be used worldwide at no additional expense.
